It's never easy coming back from vacation....never. I think most times we need a vacation from our vacation, am I wrong? It's almost a full week after our vacation last week and my brain still wants to be on island time.
ACK, aka Nantucket is one of my very favorite places on earth and lucky for me right in my own state. A short trip to the island can refresh anyone. Our vacation was a trip planned by my husband, somewhat last minute but a very necessary trip at that. I am a huge fan of the island. I have been visiting there every year since 2005. The summer before I met my husband was the last time I had visited and every year we talk about visiting.
Well this year my husband surprised me with the get-a-way only 3 weeks in advance and we, along with our son Jack and my in-laws hopped on their boat and spent the week away!
Here we go!
We arrived in Nantucket just in time for dinner. Ate at Straight Wharf and then had a few cocktails at the Gazebo (memories of the days of Figawi with the girls came rushing back). We ran into friends, someone my husband works with and childhood schoolmates of my brother-in-law. The following day was rainy so we hit the shops and worked off the food and cocktails from the night before.
Of course I had to work a little and hit my favorite home decor shop on the island...Bodega. You can't not fall in love with the store when you walk by and the women in the shop are so friendly.
I spent 40 mins chatting about the shop and how it is such inspiration on the search for my own studio space. While there I picked up a few goodies for a client as well as our home and will be sure to share and link those soon!
Although everyone you see is either wearing their Nantucket Reds or a Nantucket/ACK logo shirt of some kind, the clothing and fashion shops on Nantucket don't disappoint! When on Nantucket you must pop into Skinny Dip Nantucket,
The rest of our days on the island were sunny and warm. We spent a full day on bikes riding the island. We picked up our bikes from Nantucket Bike Shop.
Lastly we rode out to Madaket we stopped at Millie's for lunch. I got the best lobster quesadilla I have ever had. SO DAMN GOOD.
On our last full day we took the dingy out to a secluded area and out to the jetties. We picked up beach glass, seashells and conchs and played in the tide pools. Jack has so much fun he passed out on me on the ride to Jetties Beach. It was a perfect last day on the island.
On Tuesday afternoon we left the Nantucket Boat Basin and headed to Martha's Vineyard. I have only been to Martha's Vineyard once before for the 4th of July a few years back and was excited to go back.
We docked in the harbor in Oak Bluffs and headed to Nancy's for dinner, walked the gingerbread houses and rented a Jeep Wrangler for the next day.
On Wednesday I got up just after sunrise and enjoyed a cup of coffee on the harbor. It was so peaceful and beautiful.
By the way, if you haven't noticed the hydrangea game on Nantucket and MV is strong. It made me so excited for the row of white hydrangea's to be planted in our front yard.
Once we were done in Edgartown, we took the car ferry to Chappaquitic, briefly drove down to the famous bridge and then off to Aquinnah to Gay Head. If you haven't been to Gay Head, take the drive out. Believe me, the view in person is totally worth it.
I hadn't been back to Aquinnah since my last time on the island and I wanted to share the amazing view that I remembered for so long with my husband and son.
On our way back to Oak Bluffs we stopped in Menemsha, and we got an ice cream cone and walked around the quaint little fishing town. I stopped in an adorable little shop called Pandora's Box. Similar to Nell's in Edgartown, this store has all my favorite small clothing brands as well as some larger well known brands. Definitely a place to find classic pieces that are unique.
On our last night in MV we took Jack to Flying Horses Carousel. Built in 1876, the horses don't go up and down but as you go around you have to try to collect the rings off the arm that hangs on the inside and outside of the carousel. There is only one brass ring in all of the silver rings, we got plenty of silver but we never got the brass ring. It sure was fun to try!
Upon leaving MV we headed out to Provincetown on our last stop on our week long boat trip. We love P-Town and had so much fun walking downtown, people watching and eating some delicious food.
One night was good in P-Town, although none of us wanted to go home, it was time. The next morning we woke up, ate breakfast (the most delicious warm donuts from The Donut Experiment. We made oreo, graham cracker, coconut, old fashioned and of course Jack had to have is frosted with sprinkles!
We had such a great time, we especially loved Nantucket that we decided to make it a new annual family trip!
I know photo overload but I love to share our experience, gives you a glimpse into a more personal side than just my designer and project side. We have a very busy year still ahead and I will be sure to share those experience with you as well if you enjoyed this! Let me know!
